Melburnians are football crazy! Every week
during the Winter months they flock in their
thousand to see their revered football team
play. Through rain, hail or shine they voice
their support for their favorite footballers.

There are 16 football clubs in the Australian
Football League (AFL). Football matches are
played on the weekends and on Friday nights.
One of the most famous and popular clubs
is the Collingwood Football Club. It has
as its mascot the black and white bird called
the magpie. The team players also wear a
black and white striped jumper. Each team
in fact has its own special mascot and special
team colours.
Collingwood football supporters are considered
to be the most fanatical. Many supporters
like those in Collingwood paint their faces
in the team colours, some even dye their
hair! Huge 1Oft. X 20ft. Banners of crepe
paper are made each week, by the clubs' cheer
squads. The footballers run through these
banners at the start of the match. Slogans
like "Eat them Alive" are painted
on the banners to motivate the team to win.
The game is divided into 4 quarters. Each
quarter lasts for approximately 20 - 25 minutes.
There are 18 players to a side. The aim is
to kick the oval football through the goal
posts to score 6 points. A ball kicked through
the shorter posts earns only 1 point.
Football is a physically demanding and tough
sport. A footballer's body is not padded
like a gridiron football player's, even though
they tackle equally as hard in both sports!
The top footballers can earn as much as A$
30,000 per game! A successful footballer
needs to be determined and courageous.
