Specific questions answered as follows :
  1. 14 participants were able to practise their Japanese with their host family a little bit. Some families spoke mostly English and our students wanted to speak Japanese, so they spoke Japanese whenever they could.
  2. Students benefited by staying with a family in the following ways :
    1. new experiences (bath, food, Japanese life, culture)
    2. practise Japanese / improved Japanese speaking
    3. new relationships / met really nice people
  3. The difficulties encountered were :
    1. homesick (overcome by ringing friends, keeping busy)
    2. not being able to communicate (overcome by using gestures, dictionaries, simplified English, miming)
    3. didn't feel very welcome (overcome by having the attitude "take the good with the bad")
  4. Activities done and places visited with host family were varied. Students went to a local festival, parade, lookouts, parks, movies, shopping in Kyoto, restaurant visits, karaoke, friend's places, Japanese barbecue, carved a Japanese stone, museum, traditional bath, ceramics shop, tea ceremony, boat trip on Lake Biwa, grandparent's house, supermarket, bowling, scenic drive.
  5. 8 participants would not have any problems staying with the same host family. 4 participants said they would not like to stay with this family again, and the remaining 5 made no comment. Only one participant gave a reason (didn't really get along with them too well.)
