Specific questions answered as follows :
- 14 participants were able to practise their
Japanese with their host family a little
bit. Some families spoke mostly English and
our students wanted to speak Japanese, so
they spoke Japanese whenever they could.
- Students benefited by staying with a family
in the following ways :
- new experiences (bath, food, Japanese life,
culture)
- practise Japanese / improved Japanese speaking
- new relationships / met really nice people
- The difficulties encountered were :
- homesick (overcome by ringing friends, keeping
busy)
- not being able to communicate (overcome by
using gestures, dictionaries, simplified
English, miming)
- didn't feel very welcome (overcome by having
the attitude "take the good with the
bad")
- Activities done and places visited with host
family were varied. Students went to a local
festival, parade, lookouts, parks, movies,
shopping in Kyoto, restaurant visits, karaoke,
friend's places, Japanese barbecue, carved
a Japanese stone, museum, traditional bath,
ceramics shop, tea ceremony, boat trip on
Lake Biwa, grandparent's house, supermarket,
bowling, scenic drive.
- 8 participants would not have any problems
staying with the same host family. 4 participants
said they would not like to stay with this
family again, and the remaining 5 made no
comment. Only one participant gave a reason
(didn't really get along with them too well.)
