@It is 84 years since our school was founded by Fumi Nakano in 1917 as
a culture school of sewing. Sewing used to be very important for people
to live with. It has a long history.
@Our school is located in Otsu in Shiga, in the center of the Japan Islands, near Kyoto. And it stands on a hill, overlooking Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan.
@There are about 600 students and 56 teaching staff in our school. We
have two departments, ordinary and domestic science. In the ordinary department
there are 4 courses, such as academic, regular, welfare and sports courses.
And in the domestic science department, there are 3 courses, Japanese sewing,
dress making and cooking.
@Our school encourages sports. Almost every year the badminton team, volleyball
team, gymnastic team, softball team and basketball team win first prize
in local tournaments. And they participate in all Japan Inter High-school
Championship Competition, called "Inter High". Last year our
badminton team became No.1 in such "Inter High".
@At the same time, our cultural clubs such as chorus club and marching band club are very active and popular among students.
@We have seven classes a day Monday through Friday. Our school begins
at 8:30 in the morning, and finishes at 3:15 in the afternoon. Each class
lasts for 45 minutes, and we have a 10 minutes break between classes. And
we have a 40 minutes break for lunch after 4 classes in the morning.
@We have no school on Saturday every other week. And every other Saturday
we haveschool events only in the morning.
@Our school regulations are a little bit strict compared to any other public schools. The students are not allowed to wear make-up, nail polish, have dyed hair and so on.
@Our campus community, educational institution, is called "Sumire
Gakuen". Sumire means "violets" in the roadside. It has
a junior college and kindergarten, in addition to our high school. Many
of our students go to our college after their graduation.
@Our school has three terms (semesters). The first term begins in April
and ends in July. The second term begins in September and ends in December.
The third term begins in January and ends in March. We have vacations in
spring, summer and winter. Summer vacation begins on July 20th and finishes
on August 31st. During the summer vacation some students enjoy swimming
in the sea and traveling for a couple weeks, and others have training camps
for club activities and for going to universities on our campus.
I@n the second year we fly to Hokkaido on our school excursion. And we have a culture festival in autumn as well as a sports festival. We put many things on display such as paintings, handicrafts and fashionable costumes. Fashion shows are especially popular among all the students.
